Award-winning singer, pianist and songwriter GEORGE HOWE is one of Chicago's best and most popular piano bar entertainers in the Windy City. His repertoire is extensive, covering virtually ALL musical styles - showtunes, pop/rock, American songbook, jazz, country, you name it! In fact, his encyclopedic knowledge of Broadway musicals and American Popular Song is truly astonishing.
He has performed at Davenport's, Chicago's premiere and truly authentic piano bar and cabaret, since 1999. His Monday Night Open Mic brings together professional, amateur, and inspiring talents from around the Chicagoland area for an evening of music, fun and camaraderie. He is also the "Howe" in Chicago's longest running cabaret act "The Nitz and Howe Experience" (featuring entertainer extraordinaire Daryl Nitz), having recently performed over 1000 performances.
Although he loves Chicago, GEORGE is equally thrilled to be performing at The Front Porch Piano Bar in Ogunquit, ME this summer!
Whether leading the audience in sing-a-longs, taking requests, playing one of his showtune inspired games ("Broadway Bingo", "Broadway A to Z", "Showtune MadLibs"), improvising a musical mash-up, premiering an original song/parody, or belting out a tune in his strong, clear tenor voice, GEORGE HOWE provides top-notch piano bar entertainment for people of all ages and musical tastes.
GEORGE is also a prolific composer/lyricist having composed the scores for many family musicals which have premiered in Chicago and subsequently produced all across the country. Some of the titles include "Mr. Popper's Penguins", "Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type", "Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile" and "The Emperor's Groovy New Threads". His musical "Arnie the Doughnut" was chosen for the 2012 New York Musical Theatre Festival. Outside the world of children's theatre, George received both a Joseph Jefferson Citation and After Dark Award for Best New Musical for "Queen Lucia" (2005). His musical "Sleeping Ugly" won an After Dark Award in 2006 for Best Original Score.
His latest musical, "Northanger Abbey", based on the novel by Jane Austen, recently opened to rave reviews at Lifeline Theatre in Chicago, IL. Due to popular demand, it has extended its initial run and will play through August 13. For more information, check out the Lifeline Theatre website.
A FEW REVIEWS FOR "NORTHANGER ABBEY"...
"Composer-lyricist Howe has spent most of his career writing children’s musicals, but “Northanger Abbey” showcases a lyricist with the breadth and depth of Stephen Sondheim, a rapturous way with melody, and a gift for penning songs that ideally match the characters who sing them. Each of the show’s nearly 20 songs is a jewel." - Hedy Weiss, Chicago Sun-Times
"Howe's score, created for piano, violin and cello, is quite a lovely song-suite, capturing the 'Sweet, Indelicate Complexities' of the Austen world." - Chris Jones, Chicago Tribune
"Howe's music is stately and sweeping - the lyrics in particular are exact, dexterous, and highly literate." - Patrick O'Brien, BroadwayWorld
"This superior production is nothing short of enchanting and is sure to delight Austen fans and musical theater lovers alike." - Jamie Mermels, TimeOut Chicago
GEORGE is also adjunct faculty at the Chicago College of Performing Arts (CCPA) at Roosevelt University where he teaches Musical Theatre History along with accompanying and musical directing for the theatre department.
